EXHIBITION

OKOK gallery

31.01. - 08.02.2026

Roman Roth (solo exhibition)

Opening on Fri 30.01.2026, 6-9 pm

Opening hours:
Tue - Sun 12h - 18h

In his time-based works, Romon Roth plays with the space between figurative and abstract movement. Through reconfiguration, repetition and sound modification, he transforms images into a newly constructed virtual space. His videos are both formal and funny, joyfully critiquing consumerism while mirroring the human spirit in all its contradictions.

Born in 1990 in Berlin, Roth studied media studies and communication design in Vienna, followed by new media and moving image at the Berlin University of the Arts. His work has been exhibited at, among others, Domäne Dahlem, Berlin (2025), Microkunsthalle, Berlin (2025), Cairo Video Festival, Cairo (2024), and the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art, South Korea (2023). In 2022, he was awarded Best Emerging Talent at the B3 Biennale in Frankfurt.

WORKSHOP ON SONIC CHARACTER DESIGN

Sound Mates +++ (plusplusplus)

24.01.2026
time 2 - 6pm

“Sound generates publics,” writes sound studies scholar Brandon LaBelle, pointing to the social agency of sound in public space. But how do we claim space through the sounds we make? How do we shape presence through the sonic traces we leave behind? And how do sounding and listening co-produce our immaterial presence within shared public spaces?

Individuality manifests through sound like in no other medium. Our behavior, the artifacts that surround us, and our ways of moving through the city all produce a personal sonic footprint—distinct, relational, and inherently ephemeral.
This workshop invites participants to think of character through sound. What remains of identity when fashion, visuals, and other conventional markers are set aside, and individuality is constructed purely sonically? Drawing inspiration from classic character design processes in game design, we will develop our own sonic characters using sound alone. After learning the basic principles of field recording and sound composition, we will venture into the diverse urban soundscape of Kreuzberg to collect, shape, and design individual sonic traits. With a humorous and experimental approach, the workshop explores sound as a tool for expressing territory, personality, ephemerality, and relationality. No prior experience is required. The workshop can be fully completed using a smartphone and a Bluetooth speaker. Participants who have access to a laptop or field recorder are encouraged to bring them.

the workshop is free

unlived present

These are all the reasons you should never leave the house. A growing pain, a crevice, a moment of silence so unbearable, a belting yearning for the process to begin; anew. Leave the house again, this time, better. The laughter subsides, your steps now echo, indefinite. Somewhere between the line that was crossed and the closed door, you welcome the idea.

Fulminance is the mother of courage. Rhymes are confusing, especially when they don’t rhyme. This time, this place, this configuration, an unsettling shape of comfort. Blessed are those who depart when it is due, for what remains if the limbs do not follow.

Thus you remain; paging Simone Weil from the fortress of hunger – presence. Just like if mathematics consisted of addition, only. Division would seem foreign, but I’m certain, hunger, they would know. Regardless, it is imperative to continue as though absence were not only absence but abscess, and something then, would surely grow.

Until then, you persist; generous with your love. You stay in space hoping space will close, adequately. A reaching hand grazes the beam, but they give it the connection. The crowd applauds in an uneven cadence.
